‘Autumn Stroll’ Wood Ducks

Derek Wicks 'riverbed Rendezvous'

This painting was my submission for the 2018 WHC print and stamp. In the end WHC did not want to use it so it will go to Ducks Unlimited for 2018. The original will be available from me until May 2017 and then through The Algonquin Art Centre’s 2017 show.
12×16
Acrylic on Masonite
$1500.00 Can.
Framed in a hand rubbed black-red moulding with gold metal leaf accent. Use the link below to see larger framed image.
‘Anytime Now’ Grizzly Bear

Derek Wicks Anytime Now Grizzly

This painting was a fun painting exploring the many different textures of nature. The soft, but rugged fur of the grizzly is what originally attracted me to do this painting. I found myself loving the water and rock textures just as much! This original will be available through me until April and then through the Masters Of Miniature Show in Alberta.
11×14
Acrylic on Masonite
$1300.00 Can.
Framed in a hand rubbed black-red moulding with gold metal leaf accent. Use the link below to see larger framed image.
‘The Morphing Landscape’ Polar Bear

Derek Wicks The Morphing Landscape

This painting was an exploration into the harsh environment of the northern tundra. The massive polar bear is one of the few creatures who can survive the elements of the far north making it a perfect subject matter for the setting. This image is part of the 2017 Ducks Unlimited National Portfolio.
21×40
Acrylic on Masonite
$5000.00 Can.
Framed in a hand distressed off white moulding with gold metal leaf crackle insert and capped with silver accent. Use the link below to see larger framed image.

2016 Fall E-Newsletter

Hello everyone, I trust that this new edition of the Enewsletter finds everyone in good health and spirits. Since my last Enewsletter (almost a year ago, sorry) things have been going extremely well here on the Wicks homestead. I have exciting news on new coin releases, website update, new original and canvas and shots from our western trip. So away we go……..

2016 Lucky loonie

2016 Lucky loonie

2016 Olympic ‘Lucky Loonie’

As many of you know I grew up in the Childrens Aid for most of my adolescence (10-16), so my country fed me, clothed me and educated me, so to speak. It goes without saying that I love my country more then words can say for all it has done for me. In August the Royal Canadian Mint released the new one dollar coin, the “Lucky Loonie” for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. I have to say a tear came to my eye seeing my work on actual circulation currency of the country I owe so much too. I have won many awards, none of them hold as much weight as the pride I have today for this honour. As most Canadians know the Lucky Loonie is a tradition for each olympics. For all my other friends in the world the Loonie is the name of our one dollar coin and the Lucky Loonie is a coin minted for each Olympics to bring our athletes luck at the games. The first Lucky Loonie was embedded in the ice at the 2002 Salt Lake City games and has become a Canadian tradition and the symbol of national pride ever since. I am told that this is the first year that ‘Lucky Loonie’ will be engraved on the coin. I will be displaying the original art used to create the coin at my home show during the Images Studio Tour over the Thanksgiving weekend Oct 7-10. You can read more about the show below.

The Morphing Landscape

The Morphing Landscape

‘The Morphing Landscape’
Tourneying into the arctic morning the majestic polar bear combs his frozen domain. “The Morphing Landscape” depicts the ever changing frozen world of the arctic region. These polar ice fields are essential for the survival of the polar bear and are challenged everyday by global warming. Global warming is the number one threat to the survival of one of natures most beautiful predators.

This Giclée Canvas Edition is limited to only 25 signed and numbered pieces with only 11 remaining. This is a large canvas of 20″ x 38″ and is printed with 100% pH balanced archival canvas using Epson Ultra Chrome K3™ inks for a true giclée reproduction that will last a life time.

This past August and beginning of September my wife Suzanne and I travelled over 10,000 Kilometers out west. Our trip included stops in Nebraska, Denver CO, Rocky Mountain Park, Mt.Evans Park, Yellowstone Park, Deadwood SD and through the scenic shores of three Great Lakes. This trip was very special as my wife final came with me and got to see all the wonderful places I have been over the years. Trips seem to be allot more fun when they are with the ones you love. Summer Is here!

Hello {!firstname_fix}, I trust that this new edition of the Enewsletter finds everyone in good health and spirits. The official first day of summer may not be until June 20, but we have already had several days well above 30°C or 90°F! Going to be a very hot summer this year with little rain fall. Great for the outdoors people, but not so good for my garden and pond. In this edition of the Enewsletter I have several new announcements and updates:

• Oro-Medonte Artist Of The Year

• Alaska field research trip for Smithsonian Show

• What is on the Easel

• Originals sale

• Barrie Workshops

Water & Snow Workshops

The first workshop in Barrie, ON is only two weeks away! This workshop will be on painting snow textures and we will be painting my piece “Into The Briar”. In the last three weeks we have had 4 people drop out opening up room for those last minute people. The second workshop in July on “Moving water” is sold out with waiting list only available. If you are interested in the snow workshop please contact me ASAP or use this link to sign up for the course. For those who are already signed up I look forward to painting with you!

Oro-Medonte Artist Of The Year

I am very happy to announce that I have received the honour of Oro-Medonte Chamber of Commerce Artist of the year. It was a very nice night with my wife and good friend Jan Novak and all the other members of the chamber. I would like to congratulate the other nominee’s, every single person was so deserving of the award. I would also like to thank Members of Parliament Bruce Stanton and Garfield Dunlop for their wonderful letters to me. I also received a nice certificate from the House Of Commons for the achievement. It is always nice to be recognized.

On The Easel

As posted in my last Enewsletter the painting on my easel is of a cardinal in a winter scene. I have been so busy with website updates and field work that I have not had very much time to work on it. I will be posting updates on my blog soon, I promise! I am also working out new compositions for a polar bear painting. This painting is a commission work for my good friends Fidel & Michelle Singh. I will also be posting these composition studies as I finish them.

Alaska Equipment Fund Raiser

As you all know now I am off to Alaska to gather reference materials for the proposed “Visions Of The Boreal Forest” show at the Smithsonian. In one part of this expedition I will backpacking over a mountain pass with nothing but the backpack on my, well back! Weight during this endeavour is a serious issue. The more weight you have the harder it is to backpack over the mountains. I have better than average photographic equipment, but it is much too heavy for a trek like this. This also goes for my tent, sleeping bag and tripod among other things. Now the expedition pays for us to get there, the majority of equipment and most of the gear, but not everything. There are certain things like lens’, tents and sleeping bag that I will have to cover. To give you an idea of the cost I am looking at, one light-weight lens alone costs $2900.00. Several people have suggested looking for sponsors and donations to cover the expense, but I am really not the ‘something for nothing’ type, so……I am going to do what I swore I would never do, but desperate times call for desperate measures…. I am going to sell off originals that I have kept for myself and available originals at a VERY GOOD PRICE! When I say good I mean half. I have adjusted the VIP originals page to show the reduced prices. This is a once in lifetime expedition that I am going on and I am willing to make a few ‘one time only’ sacrifices to fund it. If you are interested in one of the originals please contact me personally at (705) 835-5480 and we can workout payment or a payment plan. Any support to fund this endeavour would be very much appreciated! If you are at all interested please contact me as soon as possible. I hate reducing my works value, so as soon as I have reached my photography cost I will be returning the originals remaining back to their original prices. Here is the link to originals.

My next generation website

Website image

I have not been very happy with my website for a long time now. I really felt like it was starting to look a little… hoakey! I had my website made to be very fast loading and search engine friendly in the past, but now I think we can get a little more interesting without hurting the viewer experience. My new website will be more interactive than ever. It will contain more content and a much nicer user interface that will make the trip to my website much more interesting. The site is still a good two weeks away from being live, but I think it will be well worth the wait. The production of this website is also why you have not seen any new entries in my blog. I want a lot of new content when it goes live and well… the website has been taking up all my time!!!

Alaska Trip

Well I have received the final dates for the trek into the Alaskan wilderness for the reference materials to make my paintings for the Smithsonian show. I am now going to be hiking over a very rarely used mountain pass to get down to the Noatak river. I believe the hike is 44 miles over 7 days, no time for slacking! There will only be 4 of us doing this section of the expedition, should be a lot of fun if I survive, LOL. The map above is a map of the trek we will be taking over the month long event. To have a better look click on the image to enlarge. I have opted out of the final week as I will be going into the heart of Denali National park on a personal tour of my own. Upon my return I will be creating a photo slideshow of the trip and will present it at my studio during the Images Studio Tour Weekend. As a member of the VIP Enewsletter I will also set up a private viewing area on my website for all of you out of town VIP’s (this means you!).

Spring 2012 Enewsletter

PTP-Derek C Wicks Enewsletter

Spring Is Here!
Spring is here! The sounds of jousting robins and croaking frogs in my pond have signaled the official start of spring. As I have said many times before I do love winter, mainly for the fantastic photographic shots I get, but come March I am ready for spring and the warmer weather. Spring also bring all the immigrating birds and waterfowl into my area for a short while. The small pond in my area is now the temporary home for about 100 Bufflehead ducks as they pair up and then head north to breeding grounds. A couple of new developments this time so lets get to it!

Snow & Water Workshops

In my last Enewsletter I announced the two workshops that will be held in Barrie, well they are finally booked! Two workshops will be run with a limit of 15 participant in each class. I hate to limit the numbers, but I found that anymore and I can not give everyone quality one on one time. The First is the Snow Textures workshop were we will be painting “Into the Briar”. This workshop will be a three day workshop held on June 22, 23, 24, 2012 at the Barrie Art Club. Space is limited to 15 people and there is only 6 spaces left as of today. If this workshop fills there will be a second set of dates announced.
The second workshop is the Moving Water workshop schedueled for July 13, 14 & 15, 2012 again at the Barrie Art Club. This workshop is almost full with only 4 spots remaining. Again, if class exceeds 15 people a second date will be schedualed. I have created a full day by day detailed descriptition page on both workshop. The information page is available here.
Feel free to contact me with any questions or inquires about the workshop, my dorr is always open!

Nominated For Artist Of The Year

I received a very flattering call from the Oro-Medonte Chamber of Commerce on Friday. It seems I have received several nomination for the “Artist Of The Year” at the Chamber of Commerce 2012 Business Excellence Awards. What I think is great about this is that artist very rarely receive any kind of acknowledgement from government or the powers that be as valued members of the business community. Personally I think that very single one of us ‘artists’ should be recognized for more then just our talents. The Arts not only feeds the cultural needs of a society, it also creates interest in the region the county or the municipality. Artist’s are usually over looked as legitimate business people. Think about how hard it is for all of us to create interest in ourselves and our work, promote our product (in this case our work) to the public and then establish a revenue flow to sustain us. Most people forget that artist have mortgages, car payment and so on and so on. For the county to even consider me is a greater honor then the DU National Artist of the year awards or the Smithsonian invite, why you ask? Because it not only acknowledges the art ability, but the ability to run a successful business. If I win this award, I win it for ever one of us that struggles every day to follow our dream.
On The Easel

As the painting for the Celebration of Wildlife Art original is almost done I will be moving on to a couple of new commission that a few collectors have been patiently waiting on. The next painting is one several of you might remember from last year on my blog. It is a composition of a male Cardinal in a winter setting. I am really anxious to start this painting, I think I might even film the painting and make a “Start to finish” DVD from it. I will post its progress to my blog as it comes along.

Painting In Progress

Have you ever had one of those weeks were everything just comes apart? And to top it all off these bad weeks always come at the most inopportune time, Murphy’s law, right? Well the last two weeks have been the poster boy for Murphy’s law. I had the second Hard Drive failure of the year for me. Usually this is not a big deal as all my files are backed up. Here comes the but…. but I just bought a new Apple with OSX Lion operating system on it and guess what…. it hates me (LOL). Now do not get me wrong in the end I have found Lion to be a fantastic operating system, it is the delivery of the operating system that sucks! Let me explain. Apple has decided that the operating system for their new computers will be a download instead of having an operating disk in the box when you get your new computer. To make a long story short I had to download and reinstall the OSX 4 times and each download is 6 Gigs big. Apple does not save the OSX as a download so if you start installing again, it is an all new download. Of course all this comes as I am trying to meet the May 1 deadline for having my new painting to the Celebration of Wildlife Art Show in Kenai, Alaska. Despite the severe mental hardship that I have to overcome this last to weeks (feel sorry for me yet?), the painting is coming along nicely and should be completed in about three days. I will post the finished product to my blog on completion.
